Household Roles

A plan fails when every person assumes somebody else owns the next move.

TL;DR

Assign jobs for water, medical, documents, pets, alerts, shutoffs, and check-ins before stress destroys memory.

How this plan fails

Roles are not ranks. If the assigned person is absent, hurt, asleep, or unreachable, another person must know the fallback.

Do not spend your first mistake here

  • Letting the most anxious person become the only decision-maker.
  • Creating roles that depend on being home together.

The household does not need a command structure. It needs fewer blank looks.

Before anything happens, assign ordinary jobs. Who checks alerts? Who fills containers? Who grabs medication? Who gets the pet carrier? Who knows where documents are? Who texts the out-of-area contact?

Write the backup owner next to every job. Disasters do not wait until the person with the binder is home.

Run the first ten minutes as a drill. No dramatic script. Just start a timer, turn off the lights, and see what the household can actually find.
